Checkered Rugs

Our checkered rugs are machine washable and come in checkerboard and plaid patterns. Low-pile styles in brown, beige, green and blue have a non-slip backing and run from 2x3 to 10x14, including 2x6 and 2x10 runners. The Haven shag adds a softer 1.6-inch pile and black and white checks.

How to Choose a Checkered Rug

High-contrast checks, like black and white, stand out from across the room. Tonal pairs, like beige on cream, sit quieter next to wood floors and busy sofas.

Low pile suits kitchens, entryways and dining areas, where chairs need to slide and spills are common. The shag belongs in bedrooms and kids' rooms, where a soft pile matters more.

Sizes by Room

The Haven shag comes in 4x6 to 8x10, and most low-pile styles stop at 8x10, so check the size list on each rug.

Washing and Care

Every washable checkered rug here goes in the washing machine, shag included. Wash low-pile styles cold on a gentle cycle without bleach; for the Haven shag and for drying, check the care notes on each rug's page.

Low-pile rugs 5x7 and smaller fit a 2.2 cu ft washer, while a 9x12 needs 4.2 cu ft. Between washes, vacuum the shag to keep its pile clean.

Checkered Rug FAQs

Are checkerboard rugs still in style?

Yes, checkerboard and plaid rugs still show up in modern, retro and farmhouse rooms. Bold black-and-white grids make a statement, while soft plaids and tonal checks blend in more easily.

What makes a rug a checkerboard rug?

A checkerboard rug alternates two colors in even squares, like a game board. Plaid and tartan rugs, which this collection also includes, use crossing stripes of different widths instead.

Are checkerboard rugs expensive?

Not necessarily. Price here depends mostly on size, so a 2x3 or a runner costs far less than a 9x12, and washing at home saves on professional cleaning.

What color looks good with black and white checkered?

Warm wood, cream and soft white keep a black and white check from looking harsh. If you want color, pick one accent, such as sage green or rust, and repeat it in pillows or art.
