In a living room, the rug should connect the sofa, chairs, and coffee table in one comfortable seating area. If an oversized rug, place at least the front legs of your main seating on the rug. In larger rooms, choose a size that fits all major furniture pieces.

The right bedroom rug should extend beyond the sides and foot of the bed, giving you a soft place to step in the morning. For the best look, place the rug beneath the bed and nightstands; in smaller rooms, position it under the lower two-thirds of the bed.

Choose a rug that supports your main work area without blocking cabinets, appliances, or walkways. Low-profile rugs and runners are especially practical in busy kitchens.

Entryway rugs create a welcoming first impression, while runners add warmth and rhythm to long, narrow spaces. Leave an even border of visible flooring around the rug wherever possible.

An outdoor rug helps turn a patio, balcony, or deck into a comfortable extension of your home. Choose a size based on the furniture arrangement, just as you would indoors.
